The Mathematics Behind the Calendar
You might think a year is just 365 days but it is not that simple. If we stuck to exactly 365 days our seasons would eventually drift out of sync. The Earth actually takes approximately 365.2425 days to orbit the sun. To account for this we use leap years.

How to Calculate Years Between Dates Manually
If you find yourself without internet access and need to perform this calculation you can do it by hand. It requires patience and a specific subtraction method often called the "borrowing" method.
Let us say you want to calculate the time between a Start Date of 2020-01-15 and an End Date of 2023-03-10.
1. Set up the subtraction
Write the dates in Year-Month-Day format with the End Date on top.
2023 - 03 - 10
2020 - 01 - 15
2. Subtract Days
You try to subtract 15 from 10. You cannot do that so you must borrow from the Month column. When you borrow a month you have to know how many days were in the previous month relative to the end date. For simplicity in manual math we often borrow 30 days.
Current Days: 10 + 30 = 40
40 minus 15 = 25 days.
3. Subtract Months
You borrowed one month from March (03) so it is now February (02).
02 minus 01 = 1 month.
4. Subtract Years
2023 minus 2020 = 3 years.
Final manual result: 3 years, 1 month, 25 days.
This manual method is decent for estimates but it is flawed because "borrowing 30 days" is an assumption. If the month you borrowed from was February you should have only borrowed 28 days (or 29).
